Air Conditioning not working, right? Know what to look for and how to troubleshoot your air conditioner to save money this summer.
Is troubleshooting the answer to your cooling woes? If it feels like your air conditioner isn’t cooling the air as well as it should take a look at some tips to try before making that service call.
The number one reason that air conditioners don’t run efficiently is a dirty air filter. Especially if you have kids and pets, change that air filter monthly.
Check your thermostat to be sure it is on the right setting. It should be on “cool” or “auto.”
The outside part of the air conditioning holds the condenser. Be sure it is free of sticks, leaves, or other debris. Clear away any plants or shrubs so that it has plenty of air circulation around it. Make sure that tree limbs are at least 5 feet above it.
It is a mistake to think that closing the vents in unused rooms will save money. Actually, it is the opposite! So be sure that all vents, both intake and return, are clear of rugs, furniture and blockage.
If the unit doesn’t turn on, it might be as simple as flipping the breaker in the electrical box. Check to be sure the breaker isn’t tripped.
If leaks or cracks develop in the ductwork, it will cause cool air to escape into your walls. Might be nice for the walls, but not for keeping your home cool. So check the ducting for escaping cool air.
