How to Prepare Your HVAC Unit for Fall

Tips to Avoid an HVAC Emergency This Summer

Your heating and air conditioning system has been taking care of you all year, don’t let it down this fall. It needs some TLC as it transitions from cooling to heating. Here’s how to prepare your HVAC unit for the fall season and beyond.

Change Your Air Filter

You should change your air filter every 30-90 days, depending on your home, where you live, and if you have pets. Most people change their air filters less often, but you should definitely do it in the fall before you change from AC to heat. Your HVAC system will run more effectively and efficiently with a clean filter.

Call for Service

You don’t have to have HVAC issues for a service call. Regular, twice-yearly maintenance will help keep your heating and cooling system running right. In the fall, an HVAC technician can do the following to prep your system for cooler weather:

  • Clean in and around your equipment
  • Inspect the components including the motor, blower, fan, and fan belt
  • Check the thermostat
  • Lubricate the bearings and other moving parts
  • Check for leaks
  • Test the pilot light
  • Check and test the heat exchangers
  • Inspect the electrical
  • Check for gas leaks and proper exhaust

It might seem like fall and winter are far away, but you’ll be switching your thermostat from cooling to heating before you know it. Before you do, be sure your system is ready to transition from the hot summer months to the cooler fall and winter weather.
